The above video is an interview with London-based ceramic artist Kate Malone. It’s from a series by the filmmaking team Stephenson/Bishop called “Lightbulb,” which interviews designers, craftspeople and artists.
Malone works on large-scale public projects, one-of-a-kind ceramics and “playful” smaller pieces. In addition to her studio and kiln in London, she has satellite studios in Provence and Barcelona. In the video she says that nature is the inspiration for much of her work, commenting that the inspiration can be for literal natural objects, such as pine cones or pumpkins, or nature in concept. “It can be the abstract sense of nature, if you like the feeling of seeing things grow or every spring seeing the blossoms come.” She calls this abstract concept “life force.”
