In a new take on the term “spin art” UNSW Australia College of Fine Art graduate Ion Fukazawa created Ceramic Riders, a bicycle-powered device used to make ceramic designs. He describes the project on his web site:
“This machine explores the relationship of human interactions in the production line. While many production lines are made to produce fast, precise, and identical outcomes, more products loose its uniqueness and character. On the other hand, this machine focuses on presenting a unique production process that allows the human to express their creativity through natural forces and chance. By allowing the audience to observe the making process, I hope to engage a broader audience with an appreciation for ceramics. Most components of the machine and the clay itself has been collected locally from council clean ups, old bicycles, and tips.”
The above video, produced by Max Mclachlan, shows the machine in action, set to some murky, yet-ethereal music by the London electronic artist Burial.
