Our posts about Brazil-based artist Anna Maria Maiolino continue this week with this video Dion Tan shot for Blouin Artinfo. In the video, Maiolino discusses some of the concepts behind her Between Senses exhibition at Hauser & Wirth, New York (May 7 – June 21 2014). You can read our other Maiolino-related posts here and here.
Maiolino discusses some of the process and intent behind many of the ceramic works and drawings on display. Some of the sculptural works, for example, get their unique color during the firing process when Maiolino sets the hot ceramic forms on a bed of herbs, which catch fire and color the pieces with their smoke.
But according to Maiolino the “formal aspect” of her work isn’t enough for her. It’s important for her to keep her pieces grounded in concept and continue those in a series which may last a period of several years.
“I seek the infinite; do you understand?” she asks Tan.
