CFile typically shows you how ceramics are used in high-end design and fine art, but the material is also beloved by Very Serious People who are able to employ the unique properties of ceramics for everything from industrial processes, to air travel, to warfare.
This is a Google Tech Talk by materials engineer Peter Goldstein who works with Ceradyne Inc., a company that develops advanced ceramic materials. Goldstein approaches ceramics from its history as a scientific material, dating back to the dawn of civilization. He then walks the audience through how companies like Ceradyne have developed ceramics that can safely carry nuclear power by-products, can mine-proof armored vehicles and can be used in the nose cones for radar-guided missiles. His talk isn’t all defense (or war), he also talks about how ceramics show up in modern computing, healthcare and wind power generation.
It’s a fascinating showcase of how much mileage humanity has gotten from this one ancient material.
