Technology | Augmented Reality Plate by Andrew Tanner and Unanico

In 2012 designer Andrew Tanner (whose website is now closed) teamed up with the Unanico Group animation studio to create an augmented-reality plate which comes to life using an iOS application. The plate was produced for Royal Winton.

The plate, named “English Hedgerow” is a Chintz-style plate which references flora and fauna in English hedgerows. It features a bullfinch working on its nest, along with a fly, a caterpillar and a butterfly. A video showing how the collaboration was produced is availible below.

Although the creators claim the plate is the first augmented reality ceramics work, a similar animated ceramics project by Andrew Richardson actually came out about a year earlier, although Richardson’s plates don’t utilize a mobile device. Both are worth a look.
