Penny Evans is an artist and studio potter based out of Lismore, NSW in Australia. She works in mixed media art and contemporary ceramics and the pieces that come from her kiln reference her Kamilaroi/Gomeroi heritage.
Evans brings that tradition to her work through techniques such as sgraffito, a practice in which multiple layers or underglazes are scratched away to create contrasting images. According to Evans, the practice links to the Kamilaroi tradition of carving into trees, weapons and utensils for ceremonial and storytelling reasons.
Evans received her Bachelor of Visual Arts in ceramics at Sydney College of Arts in 1990. In 2004 she took Indigenous Studies at the Gnibi College Southern Cross University and in 2013, she received her Screen & Media Certificate from Lismore TAFE. She’s exhibited throughout Australia and abroad since 1990.
