The project 14 Rooms was a showcase of 14 international artists which exhibited at Art Basel this year. Curated by Klaus Biesenbach, the director of MoMA PS1 and Hans Ulirch Obrist, co-director of exhibitions and programs director of international projects at the Serpentine Gallery; the series invited the artists to “explore the relationship between space, time and physicality.”
Among those artists was Otobong Nkanga, an artist from Nigeria who now lives and works in Antwerp. She describes her piece, Diaspore:
“The performance consists of one to three women always carrying the plant “Cestrum nocturnum”, also known as Queen of the Night. In constant dialogue with the plant, these women navigate through a topographical map on the floor, guiding their movements through different territories.”
A short video showing some of the piece follows.
VernissageTV conducted an interview with Nkanga in more detail.
