This summer a studio from Shanghai has brought its functional porcelain and stoneware designs to Crosby Street in New York City. Since 2002 the nine young designers from Spin Ceramics have imbued ceramics from the ancient Jingdezhen tradition with their own fluid, contemporary qualities.
Their works range from ebony chopsticks, soap dishes or vases, most of which are produced in limited editions. The New York Times reported that since the studio was founded, Spin has created more than 700 designs. As many as 300 are retired yearly to make way for new works.
