The photographer Robert Cass photographed the work of Gareth Mason for the book More is More (published by Jason Jacques, New York, 2014). CFile has taken 14 images both published in the book as well as “outtakes” to show Cass’ remarkable eye for detail, color and texture. It is an extraordinary essay about a single pot from 2011 named Terrain.

Had he been here today, Ernest Chaplet would have been overwhelmed and would certainly have asked Gareth M. for a few trade secrets.

Me too. Saw the show in Jason Jacques in NYC . This is ‘thin ice’ making – a compendium of every maker’s nightmares with all the breaches, smears, slumps and lumpen areas in surface amplified by a similar approach to the glazing, and interiors were worked as much as exteriors. It made the entire surface of the work demand a slow, intimate scrutiny. The catalogue records much of these extraordinary surfaces and the exchange between Mason and Jacobs about the work is engaging to say the least.

I can attest to the awesomeness of the “More is More” catalog. It’s ridiculously lavish–as excessive as Gareth’s work. As a bonus, you get an 80,000 word correspondence between Mason and writer/collector/sage/crank Richard Jacobs. It’s astounding stuff–the best catalog investment you could make this year.
