Born in Tennessee, Shae Bishop currently resides in Kansas City. He earned his BA in ceramics and art history at the Kansas City Art Institute. The artist states that he “feel(s) a strong connection with pattern as a visual element that transcends history and material by tapping into cultural memory.” He sculpts figurative forms with areas of ceramic tile laced together with fiber materials.
Shae states in his biography: “In addition to composing patterns, all cultures create garments and architectural structures, which serve as bodily protection and visual communication. Using the figure as a foundation for this pattern information reiterates and connects those references.” Coat, pictured below, uses porcelain to achieve that effect.
Emily Duke, a ceramic sculptor, says her mission is to “highlight vernacular architecture in combination with nature to create multi-component topographies.” Her latest body of work is ceramic sculptures that combine imagined forms and fabricated sequences.
Duke was named an Emerging Artist of 2013 by Ceramics Monthly magazine. She graduated from the College for Creative Studies in 2009. She states that her content is drawn from her home town of Detroit in combination with Chicago, rural Michigan, Atlanta and Kansas City. “Using her influences as a guide, she moves through her studio practice as an inventor of space and function,” her biography states.
