Ceramic fuses are old-tech, but Swedish designer Ninna Kapadia is giving them another chance to light up a room by turning them into mechanical-looking candlesticks and candelabras. Candles and fuses are partners in crime, in a way. You may have used a candle to light your way into the basement to change a blown fuse once upon a time, but now they’re reunited, two pieces of outdated lighting working together.
The designer states of the project:
“Sculptural candle sticks created from the intriguing insides of obsolete fuse boxes. The fuse box contains carefully engineered porcelain sockets and copper parts along with a vast amount of beautiful screws. Nowadays ceramic fuses are replaced with new automatic fuses and thrown away. Ninna saves them from the scrap heap, cleans, unscrews and puts them back together in a new way so they can again do the job of providing warmth and light.
“Each candlestick is unique and built depending on what the specific parts can do with its many pre-drilled holes. The holes, often with internal threads, dictates the reassembly. The size of the fuse holder is perfect for a regular sized candle.”
