There are plenty of products being developed to help us more efficiency execute our Digital Age desires, from a camera on a stick to take better pictures when we are alone to this newly designed plate that lets us capture a supreme image of our food. The competition for social clout when posting #FoodPorn is at an all-time high, and Instagram users must be developing a keen eye for quality food photography for a project like Foodography to be such a massive hit.
Launched in Israel by the Tel Aviv restaurant Catit in collaboration with Carmel Winery the project created new style dishs to encourage social media posting when in the restaurant – free marketing. The project calledFoodography elicited the help of ceramic artist Adi Nissani to design two style plates for different photo opportunities. The Limbo is a plate that, instead of resting flat, curves upward to provide the perfect background uninterrupted by the view of fellow food photographers… I mean diners. The second design, called The 360 is a plate with a rotating dish allowing you to effortlessly capture a 360-degree video of your delicious-from-all-angles meal. Both designs have incorporated a clever resting place for your camera-ready smartphone.
Catit launched the project by inviting a group of young journalists to dine at the restaurant with the new wares. In the days following the dinner Foodography saw massive success with the news reaching upwards of 20% of Israel’s population (according to Petapixel).
To participate in this Digital Age performance art will cost you $155 per hour and according to BuzzFeed the group will be expanding the concept to restaurants internationally.
Foodography might be good news for potters, adding another desired form to their inventory to help inspire the dwindling population of young art buyers. Do you think we will be adding these photo-friendly plates to the syllabi of ceramics programs world wide? …maybe not.
