We were a little creeped-out when a company promised that their set of knives would help us “unleash our creativity,” but it turns out that Edge of Belgravia was only talking about creativity in cooking, not the kind of creativity that could earn us a nickname from our local homicide detective.
Ceramics can hold a fairly brutal edge when cared for correctly. Created by London-based designer Christian Bird, the knives are sold by the company in sets for about $435. The sets, which can also be purchased separately, include a slicer for roasts, a standard chef’s knife, a vegetable chopper, a utility knife and a small pairing knife. The grips come in lime green or onyx, the latter of which gives the whole product a satisfying, ninja-like look. The knives were nominated for a D&AD consumer product design award in 2012.
The company cautions that although ceramic blades feel hard, they can be brittle (of course) and so need to be handled carefully. They should be hand washed only, should never be dropped and never used inside a knife sharpener. There might be some chipping to the blade over time, but the company says this doesn’t reduce the blade’s sharpness. You can’t use them to cut through things like bones, frozen food or hard produce, but -by all means- feel free to do what the product photographers did and shove five of them inside a chunk of meat for no clear reason.
