Sandra Davolio grows delicate organic shapes from clay. Her growths sway and wave and ripple even in still images. They are like flower petals or tissue paper, only sharp and stark like ice; like waves which are separate entities all cresting and crashing in the same direction; like pine cones representing the golden growth pattern, a growth representing further growth, but just testing the waters for right now. Almost edible, made of sugar.
Why are delicate and organic ceramic forms so seductive, erotic? Davolio’s exceptional talent as a crafter allows these pieces to carry an almost objective lightness. The porcelain petals of her Flower pieces are so diaphanous they could only have been impressed with a learned finger. These works are evidence that something delicate and beautiful may also be powerful, may manipulate light, may grip you.
I read that Davolio wanted to make work about waves on the ocean. Yes, they are literally waving. To me, these pieces are about the material; the versatility of ceramic. A terra cotta brick is ceramic, its very purpose is to be blunt and heavy, to be stacked on top of its neighbor, to build something exceedingly solid and heavy. On the other end of the spectrum, Davolio is waving and sparkling at us. What a broad spectrum ceramics occupy!
“Sandra Davolio’s new body of work is inspired by the artist’s deep connection to nature, and in particular, to the sea.” -Joern Lohmann, gallerist
