Spaniards dominated the International Design category at this year’s second annual Coverings Installation and Design (CID) Awards at the Coverings Show in Atlanta, Georgia, much to Tile of Spain’s delight, an organization that supports Spain’s ceramic tile manufacturers and the industry. The Coverings Show bills itself as “The Ultimate Stone & Tile Experience.” The two International Design awards went to Spanish designers using Spanish tile and CFile is covering both of the projects this week.
One of the two winners was the University Teacher Training College in Granada, Spain by Ramón Fernández-Alonso and Associates. Cermica Decorativa, an international manufacturer of innovative ceramics that has its main offices in Valencia, Spain, manufactured the tile.
The project was based on the idea of providing an intimate, familiar architecture in the design of its spaces and the use of light and texture provided by its ceramic skin. It gave the building a sense of warmth from the rich but even-colored terracotta tiles. The strong horizontal lines also contribute to the building’s sense of expansiveness.
The exterior of the building is not just an attractive fronting but a ventilated façade made from 9 cm-thick once-fired tiles that increase the building’s passive energy efficiency. The enclosing wall consists of the following elements: ceramic tile (90 mm), an air gap (100 mm), a grooved galvanized steel plate with high-density polyurethane foam on its outer face (70 mm), acoustic insulation, Rockwool (50 mm) and a double plasterboard partition wall.
