Australian architecture firm Techne went for simplicity in their 2014 design of the Vilaflor school in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, Spain. The designers told ArchDaily that the building is located in Vilaflor’s historic district, which was the home of the Order of Bethlemitas Sisters who manage the 17th century school.
The designers included a white ceramic “skin” to be a ventilated facade around the building, which helps with energy efficiency. Aesthetically, the skin works to simplify the viewer’s perception of the buildings. Three units comprise the school, the shape of which evokes what the designers call, “the archetypal image of the house in the drawings of children. A pure geometry easy to interpret.”
