The German Aerospace Centre (DLR) in Bremen may not be ready to launch itself out of the atmosphere anytime soon, but the same tiles that protect space shuttles is now cladding the facade of the laboratory.
ArchDaily reports that the 2011 building designed by Kister Scheithauer Gross Architects and Architekten BDA Feldschnieders + Kister utilizes tile that is reminiscent of the heat-resistant ceramics that protect space shuttles. These were glued “centrifugally” to the building by a system developed for that purpose.
The two-storey building includes laboratories, workshops for the assembly of satellites and, despite tight security, a visitor center. The interior is characterized by blue strip lighting wrapping around the base, certainly putting the DLR’s resident lab rats in the mood for some high science.
