The Óscar Pedrós architecture firm designed a library in A Coruña, Spain which consciously tries to avoid becoming, as the architect phrased it, “a cemetery for books.”
The designer told ArchDaily that the Mediateca de Carballo building includes an inner area as an open space for reading which is surrounded by wraparound walkway that allows visitors to follow the book collection, young adult and comic book archives and a media center in a “natural sequence.”
The library, built in 2013, uses the Techlam ceramic building material developed by Levantina natural stone company. Techlam is a very thin ceramic tile, about 3 mm thick. The company states the material is impermeable, resistant to fire, heat and chemical products and does not scratch.
