London firm Matthew Lloyd Architects have been getting some attention for their work designing apartment buildings for the historic St. Mary of Eton church. The church was built in the late 19th century and the firm was hired in 2007 to design three buildings that include 31 residential units and a church center. The £6 million project was completed in 2014.
The firm states that they have a specialty for historic buildings as well as housing developments within London that are within historic settings. The challenge is to accommodate contemporary living standards along with respect to the existing site.
They state of the St. Mary project:
“The new buildings frame and strengthen the profile of the church; the treatment of the facades references the care and detailing of the historic buildings. Light blue glazed bricks shine in the daylight, contrasting happily with the red brick, and the addition of white bricks further lightens the façade. On the corners of the new buildings, the subtle diamond pattern folds around like cloth. Composed to emphasize a solid, sculpted quality, the facades impart to the new buildings a sense of permanence and belonging.”
The building has been shortlisted for the New London Awards 2015; it won a RIBA London Regional Award this year and it was shortlisted for the 2015 Housing Design Awards.
