Back in 2010, designer Joey Roth sat down with Digital Trends to talk about his small ceramic speakers, audio equipment which reflects his personal tastes for how he consumes music.
Roth said he primarily listens to music on his computer because he never had the space to justify buying a large stereo system. This was a problem because he felt smaller computer speakers compromised their design. He particularly didn’t like how many computer speakers were housed in injection-molded plastic.
“It looks like they were optimized for wind resistance rather than sitting on your desk,” he said. “That did not appeal to me.”
After educating himself about speaker design through audiophile web sites, Roth created a small set of ceramic monitors and a sub woofer. The set includes an amplifier which has inputs for the speakers, a volume control and not much else. Roth said this was to preserve the intended sound of the original audio file. He predicted that as bandwidth and increased computing power make it easier for people to consume digital music in higher-quality files, smaller speakers would become more popular with consumers.
