Atelier ChanChan is a London-based design and architecture firm founded by Zoe Chan, a graduate of the University of Cambridge and the Architectural Association School of Architecture.
ChanChan’s Herringbone House in Islington, London, was a 2013 collaboration between Chan and designer Joao Neves. Chan told ArchDaily that the light “pearl-colored” herringbone brickwork on the building was meant to articulate the building’s two volumes. The building, she said, is “neatly packed” into a wedge-shaped lot in a row of Victorian Terraces on the street and that the brickwork helps set the building apart from its neighbors.
There are two walled courtyards at either end of the house, which the designer says brings natural light and air into the home. The openings in these areas are glazed, filling the building with natural light enhanced by the light materials used through the home. She describes the courtyards as “garden rooms,” drawing inspiration from “Siheyuan,” a name for inward-looking Chinese courtyards.
