The polymath ceramist Marek Cecula is at it again. Since he moved from New York to Kielce, Poland he has been busier than ever, which is saying a lot. Not only did he produce the most influential cutting edge ceramic art while in the United States, he is also one of Europe’s most inventive designers. We’re exploring his work with a series of posts in this issue.
Cecula’s New Atelier set, which he created with the Ćmielów Design Studio and Modus Design, can be mixed and matched, allowing users to personalize the dinner and breakfast tableware according to their whims. The Modus Design company boasts that this modern Polish design lets its owners “play with porcelain.” The collection is available in white or with red, blue or green stripes.
The set was awarded a Must Have 2013 prize at the Łódź Design Festival in Poland.
Marek Cecula was born in 1944 in Kielce, Poland, where he maintains an active studio in addition to his design office in New York City, according to his biography on the Museum of Arts and Design. In 1985, he established the Ceramic Department at the Parsons School of Design, New York and headed the program until 2004, when he became the curator-in-charge for the Third Biennial for Israeli Ceramics. Cecula currently coordinates design reviews at the Bezalel Art and Design Academy in Jerusalem, and he curated the 2008 Object Factory: The Art of Industrial Ceramics at the Gardnier Museum, Toronto.
