The American Museum of Ceramic Art (AMOCA) in Pomona, California has an opening for an Executive Director. The director will oversee the fulfillment of the Museum’s core mission to collect, preserve, exhibit, and educate through works of ceramic art, and will enhance AMOCA’s profile locally, nationally, and internationally by collaborating with a talented and dedicated staff acknowledged for curating a series of compelling exhibitions and developing an important permanent collection.
Applicants should have a minimum of five years of experience in a museum (preferably), nonprofit organization, or arts-related business and at least three-to-five years experience at a senior managerial level. Applicants should have demonstrated ability to provide strong leadership, vision and strategic direction as well as experience developing and implementing strategic plans.
Founded in 2001 and opened in September 2004, AMOCA is one of the few museums in the United States devoted exclusively to ceramic art and historic innovations in ceramic technology. Its permanent collection includes more than 7,000 works. The Museum has more than 50,000 square-feet of space for exhibitions, storage, a store, a ceramics studio and artist’s gallery, as well as preparatory areas. The Museum is located 30 miles east of downtown Los Angeles and Pasadena.
Exhibitions and programming at AMOCA embrace a wide number and variety of subjects, all relating to clay. It is the goal of the Museum to increase the aesthetic appreciation of clay as an art form and to assist audiences in unraveling the creative thinking behind the making of ceramic objects. At the same time, AMOCA aims to provide confirmed clay enthusiasts with encouragement, camaraderie and exhibition opportunities.

A mural by Millard Sheets in the main exhibition hall. The Museum was previously a bank and Sheets did both outdoor mosaics and an indoor painted mural of Southern California Banks. He became director of the Otis Art Institute in Los Angeles where he hired Peter Voulkos in 1954, a move he later regretted, to create the ceramics department.
