Afritects states their design for the Soweto Theatre was meant to tell the people of Johannesburg, South Africa that this was their building. The space was completed in 2012 and opened its doors for the first time on Africa Day, May 25.
“… (The) clients wanted the community to feel connected to (the theatre), emphasising that it is essentially something built for them,” Afritects states on their design page.
The Soweto Theatre is comprised of three different performance spaces. Each structure is characterized by smooth curves and clad in tile which they tell us is ceramic, but is so colorful we suspect that it’s actually candy. The colors reach out and grab people. If the goal was to build a space the community wanted to be a part of, we think Afritects succeeded. We’d certainly spend as much time as we could there.
