Helios: Hsu Yunghsu
Chang, Rita; Tzu-Chieh, Jian
Taipei: Double Square Gallery, 2018
Light plays in, on and around these large-scale sculptural pieces by Taiwanese artist Hsu Yunghsu, who is likened to the Greek god of the sun, Helios, in Rita Chang’s praiseworthy essay, “His greeting gave me a visceral thrill. The image of Helios flashed in my mind and then projected itself onto the face of the artist who refines ceramics by kilning.”
“As far as the medium of Hsu’s work is concerned, clay is normally put under the category of crafts in the academic system of classification. However Hsu’s work reflected to purposive nature of crafts. Due to the gap between clay-based artworks and ceramic, namely the gap that Hsu coined anti-ceramics, Liao had to coin the compound concept “clay-based figurative art” to describe Hsu’s work. Fortunately, the difficulty of finding a proper term offered us a key to grasping Hsu’s works that revolved around the axis of autonomy.”
“His works forthrightly make multiple out of single, which represents an excess which regards the groundless depletion of life as an easy job. His works survives a turbulent era exactly because of such depletion. They are no longer confined to Hsu’s life experiences because they have become multiple or excessive.”
