NewsFile | Scratch + Spin, a Vinyl-inspired Bathroom + Women in Architecture Awards

Welcome back to NewsFile, our round-up of news and happenings from across the world of contemporary ceramic art and contemporary ceramics. This week, we’ve gotta hand it to our friends over at Olympia Ceramica for their nostalgia-inducing, vinyl-inspired bathroom collection.

Ceramic Vinyl Bathroom 

Sorry, no scratching and spinning here. The Vinyl bathroom collection by Gianluca Paludi for Olympia Ceramica is a contemporary reimaginging which playfully melds the classic wooden 70’s record consoles and DJ turntables. Featuring feature a recessed ceramic sink basin, the console sinks even come equipped with volume adjusting knobs for hot and cold water as well a tone arm faucet.

DesignMilk reports despite not being to actually “play” on this bathroom collection, but the wooden base supporting the basin(s) includes a storage drawer that houses a Bluetooth-controlled speaker to sync with your music storage device of choice.

Women Architects 

 The Architectural Review  and The Architects’ Journal’s have given two South American women 2018 Women in Architecture awards.  As ArchDaily reports, this year’s top prize, Architect of the Year, has been awarded to Peruvian architect Sandra Barclay, while Paraguayan architect Gloria Cabral has been selected as the winner of the Moira Gemmill Prize for Emerging Architecture.

Founding partner of Barclay & Crousse, Sandra Barclay has been awarded the Architect of the Year for her work on Peru’s Site Museum of Paracas Culture (Museo de Sitio de Paracas). Located in the harsh environment of the Paracas Desert, the museum was built to replace a structure destroyed in a 2007 earthquake. Responding to these conditions, the building is designed to work with and withstand the difficult natural conditions.

Cabral, partner at Asunción-based Gabinete de Arquitectura, was recognized for her ability to elevate humble materials in inventive ways like Paraguayan brick.

A protégé of Peter Zumthor, Cabral has developed a keen sense of elevating humble materials in inventive ways.
