BOCA RATON—Our very own Garth Clark guest curated this crucial eponymous exhibition showcasing 24 unique major works of the virtuoso ceramicist (many not exhibited in public before). Regarding George Ohr: Contemporary Ceramics in the Spirit of the Mad Potter (November 7, 2017 – April 8, 2018) at the Boca Raton Museum exhibition is both a succinct primer and survey of his vast and variegated influence on pottery and sculpture, Boca Magazine writes.
An eccentric genius who likened himself to Shakespeare, he famously said, “When I am gone, my work will be praised, honored and cherished.” He was right: It wasn’t until 1969, more than 50 years after his death, that a cache of his vessels was discovered, reappraised and, eventually, canonized. Andy Warhol and Jasper Johns became collectors, and architect Frank Gehry became one of his many champions.
Alongside Ohr’s works, were those of contemporary artists that exemplify his avant-garde, form over function aesthetic including those of Glenn Barkley, Kathy Butterly, Nicole Cherubini, Babak Golkar, the Haas Brothers, King Houndekpinkou, Takuro Kuwata, Anne Marie Laureys, Gareth Mason, Ron Nagle, Gustavo Pérez, Ken Price, Brian Rochefort, Sterling Ruby, Arlene Shechet, Peter Voulkos, Jesse Wine and Betty Woodman.
