Design | Galerie Kreo’s Chains, Cfile.org’s Top Pick from DesignMiami/

MIAMI—DesignMiami/, which is going on right now (December 6 – December 10, 2017) is the global forum for design. Each fair brings together the most influential collectors, gallerists, designers, curators and critics from around the world in celebration of design culture and commerce. DesignMiami/ is the December biannual counterpart of ArtBasel in Switzerland.

At the core of DesignMiami/ is a marketplace for collectible design, amid which the most reputable international design galleries present curated exhibitions of museum-quality furniture, lighting and objets d’art, DesignMiami/ explains.

Each year, however, one gallery’s exhibition stands above the rest showcasing innovative and ingenious design, and we’ve named Galerie Kreo for the honor. Galerie Kreo presented its unique collection of contemporary limited-edition design and vintage lighting. We especially love the gallery’s collection of hanging Chains by brother designers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec.

Featuring a modular (and possibly endless) sequence of ceramic bell-shaped lamps, the suspended organic forms appear to float like kelp undulating in the ocean. Stunning alone as sculpture, but spectacular when illuminated, as the light canopies along the curvature of each form.

Each chain is made from a different material and reflects the light differently. The stark white plaster versions seem to accentuate the light, while the anodised aluminium pieces appear glittery.

The glossy red (almost juicy) ceramic chain doesn’t include a lighting mechanism, but rather can be used as in a grouping to create a privacy screen or room divider.

The design duo tells Dezeen, their design is rooted in key aspects of their research including modules, assembly and the spacial relationships.

“Module, assembly and the relationship with the surrounding space characterise this new work. The collection is composed from light chains made out of numerous links that can be endlessly joined together.”

The chains are available in azure blue, pale green, blonde gold anodized aluminum or in a glossy red ceramic (our favorite).
