Position Announcement: Assistant Professor of Art (Ceramics)
James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History
POSITION: The College of Fine, Performing and Communication Arts of Wayne State University is seeking qualified candidates for appointment as Assistant Professor in Art with a primary focus in Ceramics, in the James Pearson Duffy Department of Art and Art History, full-time, beginning no later than August 17, 2018. This is a tenure-track position. Salary is competitive and commensurate with experience.
RESPONSIBILITIES: The successful candidate will teach courses in Ceramics which may include throwing, hand-building, slip-casting, clay bodies, glazing, firing in a variety of kilns, (including electric, gas, and raku), and in kiln building. The successful candidate should also possess knowledge and skills in digital fabrication and new technology, as they relate to Ceramics. The candidate should also possess the skills, knowledge and experience to teach in other studio art/design areas, such as Core (foundations), Digital Art, and/or Drawing.
The candidate will teach five undergraduate and graduate courses per academic year and work on an individual basis with graduate students, with the teaching load corresponding to service responsibilities, conduct a program of creative and/or scholarly work, contribute to the intellectual life of the department, and provide appropriate professional service.
QUALIFICATIONS: We are seeking an exceptional teacher with experience teaching art at the college level. At minimum, we require an MFA in Ceramics or a closely related field. A minimum of three years teaching ceramics courses at the college level and evidence of teaching effectiveness are required. Evidence of teaching excellence and willingness to mentor undergraduate and graduate students from diverse populations is preferred.
THE JAMES PEARSON DUFFY DEPARTMENT OF ART AND ART HISTORY: The Department offers programs leading to the following undergraduate degrees: BA in Art, BFA in Art, BFA in Design, BA in Art History and BA or BS in Fashion Design and Merchandising. The department also offers the following graduate degrees: MA in Art, MFA in Art, and MA in Art History. The Department currently has 28 full-time faculty and a staff of 10 for 40+ graduate students and 600+ undergraduate students. Theatre and Dance. The College’s faculty offer degrees ranging from the BA and various undergraduate professional degrees through MA, MMus, and MFA degrees to a PhD program in Communication.
