Welcome back to Friday videos, our weekly post where we ease into the weekend with some of the best footage we can find of contemporary ceramics and contemporary ceramic art. Sit back, turn your mind off (but not all the way!) and enjoy some of these selections.
Before I converted to ceramics I never would have guessed that they cross paths with architecture with such frequency. Once one realizes this, it becomes impossible not to see it. Paul Sacaridiz, in an interview with UW Madison, does an excellent job explaining the connection between contemporary ceramics and architecture in his own work. If you’ve ever been feverishly describing architectural ceramics to the uninitiated and found it difficult, this video could be a great way to indoctrinate someone.
Naturally-Cooling Ceramic Dishes
Spring is here, which gives us a window of about two weeks to hold meals outside without it either being too windy or too skin-meltingly hot. Magisso’s naturally cooling ceramics won’t protect you from renegade solar flares, but they’ll certainly help keep your food cool within minimal containers that are glazed a classy, glossy black. Just run ’em under the tap for a moment and watch their cooling sorcery work!
Sam Chung at Gallery 19
I like the immediacy with which I respond to Sam Chung’s work. His illustrated pop art spin on Korean vases hits right away and it’s so easy to get lost in watching the clouds. This video is from an interview the artist did with Gallery 19. Chung explains the history behind his work and how he was able to bring it to a modern space.
Yana Payusova, Complications, 2017
We’re going out with a bang (get it?) this week with this absolutely fantastic vase by Yana Payusova: Complications, 2017. A touching tribute to artist Akio Takamori, the vase is highly illustrated and three dimensional in a way that enhances the scene of delightful sexy chaos within. The rotating platform is a must to display a work like this, creating an almost linear story progression on a vase. I feel like I’m in a Ralph Bakshi version of a speakeasy and someone pulled the fire alarm. Excellent work.
