CASALGRANDE, Italy — Slate-like tiles made by the Italian manufacturer Ceramiche Refin are contemporary and they exult in natural details such as weathering and stains.
There’s also an unnatural feature to the “Wide” collection; a subset of those tiles, “Sketch,” utilizes a design that could have been made by a thick pencil or a piece of chalk. It adds some mesmerizing, granular texture to highlight the worn look of the slate.

“Wide” comes in sizes between 60 x 60 cm to 120 x 240 cm, meaning they’re suited to cover large areas of floor space, ideally ones that see a lot of traffic. The company suggests they’d be perfect for showrooms and reception areas, though the smaller tiles could fit in at home as well.
The set comes in five colors: white, two shades of gray, black and muddy brown. There are two variations: smooth and a more rugged, structured tile for outdoor use.

The sketch designs almost look as though they belong in a different set. We were looking at photographs of “Wide” from Ceramiche Refin and thought “Sketch” was nowhere to be found. It took a moment to realize “Sketch” was installed under a table, a feature that appeared to be a rug at first glance. It was then that we realized, taken together, the tile offers a lot of interesting design options to create visual textures across the floor, even highlighting other home furnishings.
