Danish artist Christina Schou Christensen may have reinvented the relationship between glaze and ceramic, literally turning it on its head. She exhibited this innovative work in two different solo shows in 2013, at Gallerie Sofie Lachaert, Tielrode, Belgium (September 7 – October 6) and the Charlottenborg Fonden’s Spring Exhibition, Charlottenborg, Denmark. The latter show was the result of Schou Christensen being awarded the first ever “Solo Award” from Charlottenborg Fonden, a Danish cultural institution that has promoted the interests of Danish artists within the visual arts, architecture, art craft and design since 1857.
The twist is, the glaze becomes a structural element. The stoneware took a variety of forms but they were all punctured receptacles. In some cases, the glaze merely dribbled down the sides of the stoneware but other sculptures show the path of the extremely viscous glaze as it streamed from the vessel and pooled on the ground. The ceramic glaze is freed from clinging to a surface and it actually becomes the mechanism for support, suspending the stoneware in space. The video below offers a fascinating look at Schou Christensen’s process and work-in-progress. It will be interesting to see where gravity and rethinking traditional ceramic processes will take her work in the future.
Other recent exhibitions by Christina Schou Christensen include 19greekstreet London Design Week 2013, London; Pernille Pontoppidan Pedersen and Christina Schou Christensen: Software & Glorified Ingratitude, Copenhagen Ceramics, Copenhagen (2013); and Danish Crafts’MINDCRAFT 13, Fuori Salone, Milan Design Week 2013.
