A drop-in/drop-out workshop already underway in Tanzania will give you some actual hands-on experience with the ancient building technique. Organizers who are working with the NKA Foundation, tell us that the cost is 80€ for food and accommodation, plus a 400€ contribution for the project. It began on Oct. 31, but participants can drop in anytime they like up until the workshop’s end on January 30th.
The organizers state:
Join us at the Eastern slope of the Kilimanjaro from October 31, 2015 to January 30, 2016… See our IndieGoGo post or our Facebook page for more detail or e-mail: erimescupatricia@yahoo.com.
We are going to the Kilimanjaro Region of Tanzania to build a Volunteers Quarter at the Kasirwa Arts Village with Nka Foundation. We are looking to put together an interdisciplinary team for the build. We will immerse in the local environment to explore their building traditions, to discover what resources the community already has and mobilize those resources to build a contemporary mud house and see the region as tourists.
EVERYBODY CAN PARTICIPATE! For example, our project needs a practitioner or an advance student of landscape architecture to landscape the completed unit to blend with the rural landscape, interior design to organize the interior spaces, product design to create the furniture and fittings, photography/video arts for a documentary and a sculptor/a painter to create works of art to adorn the interior/exterior spaces.
Students of architecture, construction, engineering, African studies are also welcome to do their part in the building project. You will get the credit for the role you will play in the project. Students can use the opportunity for internship, personal research or thesis. Don’t worry, it is all work… you will have short breaks from the construction project to visit local attractions and participate in field trips. You can join us at any time from 4 to 12 weeks to help build our unit. After the workshop, it is your time to relax and be a tourist.
