Exhibition | Korea meets Italy with “Korea’s Phantasma” in Milan

Until August 23 the La Triennale di Milano will showcase the work of Korean potter Ga Jin Lee in the exhibition Korea’s Phantasma. Fifty of the potter’s vases are adorned with designs made by 25 different Italian makers. According to Designboom, a partner with the project, the exhibition in Milan is a preview of the 2015 Gwangju Design Biennale (Oct. 13 – Nov. 24, Gwangju), which will showcase the cultural sensibilities and design creativity in Korea.

Kyung Ran Choi, the director of the Gwangju biennale said the contemporary celadon with willowy, gray-green glaze was meant as an interpretation of the Soswaewon, a garden in Korea’s Jeolla province that embodies Korean culture and design aesthetic.

“curated by h-sang seung, ‘korea’s phantasma’ looks at the dream of joseon period scholar, yang san-bo who originally constructed the soswaewon during the 16th centre in his hometown. yang’s intention with the garden was to seclude himself, by forming a dense bamboo forest near damyang county in order to embody the humanistic spirit of the joseon kingdom which was focused on preparing students for government service.”
