We try to be judicious about throwing around terms like “genius” on CFile, but if we were to start then Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí would qualify. His work “Casa Batlló” in Barcelona still leaves people gobsmacked nearly 110 years after its construction.
Gaudí fitted the existing facade of the building with a mosaic of stone, colored glass and ceramic discs. Even today, when superstar architects are falling over themselves to create reality-defying structures (that don’t themselves fall over), Casa Batlló remains a standout building, something built of pure imagination.
So imagine our joy when we came across this article on Designboom earlier this week. Architectural photographer David Cardelús slayed us with his pictures Gaudí’s masterpiece. We’re posting them here for you to enjoy as well.

The first time I discovered Gaudi’s architecture in a book I had to ask if it really existed. Thank you for your gorgeous photos, David. What a joy!

Thank you very much for your kindest words on my photographs. I do agree with you that you have to be very careful when using the word “genius” and that Antoni Gaudí absolutely deserves to be named as one. I am really happy to have had the incredible opportunity to photograph one of his works and that you like my photographs.

Gaudi was way out in front and arguably still is- all that work done without the help of a computer!
