The Royal College of Art (RCA) is the only entirely postgraduate institution of university status devoted to research, knowledge exchange, and teaching and practice in art, design, communication and the humanities. Located in Kensington and on a rapidly expanding site in Battersea, the College has an august history in art and design education, numerous eminent graduates and a remarkable record of graduate employment. The RCA’s reputation for world-class research has been further enhanced by its performance in the 2014 REF, where it ranked first amongst art and design institutions in terms of 4* research, with over three quarters of the College’s research assessed as ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’.
The Ceramics and Glass Programme is a world leader in research and practice. It is a site for discursive practice where cultural, social, personal, historical and aesthetic concerns intersect, and where the skills of making and thinking are developed in tandem. Our MA, MPhil and doctoral students’ work covers a wide spectrum, from design for manufacture to the unique art object, but sharing a core interest in understanding material. Students learn through a mixture of workshops, lectures, tutorials and, most importantly, through their own practice.
The RCA now seeks to appoint a new head for its Ceramics and Glass Programme. Reporting to the dean of the School of Material, the head of programme will be responsible for the academic direction, teaching and learning, research, and management of resources of the programme and its staff. Candidates will need to be able to demonstrate the ability to think dynamically and entrepreneurially in order to position Ceramics and Glass as a programme that combines high level creative practice with extensive knowledge of the cultural, technological and scientific basis for innovation in the field.
