Dutch designer Hella Jongerius (1963) graduated from the Eindhoven Design Academy in 1993. Today she runs her own sutdio Jongeriuslab, through which she works with clients such as Maharam, KLM, Ikea and Royal Tichelaar Makkum. The work shown here might surprise some. Her touch with materials is usually more textured and raw although she has been changing. Overall a more high craft aesthetics is coming into design, nudging out plain white and (like Jamie Hayon playing with a decadent palette) rich in gold overglaze and jewel colored china paints. It’s all becoming a little faux palace and this case, very seductive.

Starting in 2004, she partnered with the porcelain manufacturing company Nymphenburg in Munich, Germany. The company goes back to 1747 through the Bavarian Wittelsbach family. She produced a few projects through the company, notably her Nyphemburg sketches and her animal bowls.
The sketches consist of flowers, game and animals drawn from the company’s archives and laid out by Jongerius. The company states the works are a celebration, both of “age-old crafts and treasures ” from the company and of having options in design.

More popular, however, are her animal plates. Eight animal figures out of 700 within the company’s archives were selected to adorn the inside of bowls designed by Jongerius. These are supplemented with a pattern from the company’s design collection. They’re all pictured here for your review.
