The above video is a 2010 interview with Studio Formafantasma by Designguide.tv.
The studio is a partnership between Andrea Trimarchi and Simone Farresin, two Italian designers who work out of Amsterdam. In this video they discuss a their Moulding Tradition vases for Gallery Libby Sellers. The project engages themes of ceramic tradition and immigration. The pair began with Caltagirone, a city in Sicily which is known for its ceramic work. They found an interesting thread there, that of the “Teste di moro” ceramic works which show the faces of native Africans.
The designers state that the design has its historic roots with the Moorish conquest of Sicily back in the year 827. As immigration is a contemporary issue within Europe, the designers said they saw a “historic circle,” which inspired them to recreate the traditional vases with a contemporary twist.
