Light is a major factor in the building’s construction. The roof contains skylights which allow sunlight to enter, according to Zaragoza’s tourism web site. The rooms receive natural light through translucent facade walls and in alternating stretches of glass and metal latticework.
The roof, according to Bob Borson, is composed of 12,000 triangular ceramic tiles arranged in geometric patterns that shift depending on where the sun is.
Nieto Sobejano Arquitectos was founded in 1985 by Enrique Sobejano and Fuensanta Nieto. It has offices in Madrid and in Berlin (since 2007). The firm’s work has been exhibited at the Biennale di Venezia in 2000, 2002, 2006 and 2012; at the Museum of Modern Art, New York in 2006 and at the Kunsthaus in Graz in 2008. The firm has projects in Germany, Spain, Austria, India, Estonia and Morocco.
