Jólan van der Wiel is an architect and designer based in Amsterdam. His biography states that he “admire(s) objects that show an experimental discovery, translated into a functional design.” He believes that developing new tools is important for inspiration and that it allows new forms to take shape.
The above video, directed and produced by Miranda Stet and Peter Lipton, shows one of those ideas in action. “Dragonstone” was a project the designer created for the Salone Del Mobile in April 2014. Jólan uses a special clay, which rises from the base of the work, reaching for the powerful magnet above it. The video below demonstrates his process, which he adapted to create a series of magnetically-constructed stools.
And, just to show how much mileage Jólan can get out of the idea, in 2013 he collaborated with fashion designer Iris van Herpen for a fashion show in Paris. He made a series called “Magnetic Moon Dresses.” The designer states these fashions are “dresses whose very forms are generated by the phenomenon of attraction and repulsion.”
