Thousands of glazed terracotta “baguettes” are the defining visual feature of the Doncaster Civic Offices designed by the Cartwright Pickard architecture firm of London.
The £25 million project was completed in 2012 and brings all of the civic offices of Doncaster into one supremely energy-efficient building, according to the firm’s description of the project. The building is built around one large atrium, a feature which lends to the building’s ease-of-use. There’s a glazed corner window overlooking the square, through which people can observe the government work going on inside.
The building has room for 1,200 staff members, but the firm also touts office floorplates in the building which can be subdivided into sublettable offices. The building appears to be a work of efficiency and versatility. As a bonus, the facade lights up at night with a satisfying indigo color.
The firm was founded in 1996 by Peter Cartwright and James Pickard. “We have a clear philosophy,” the firm states, “to produce beautiful buildings that use resources responsibly.”
