Like Mirko Ihrig, who we also cover this issue, designer Niels Datema has some products he designed around the ritual of making bread.
Datema’s Artisan Breadset includes all of the necessary tools to make bread on one’s own, including a handsome porcelain bowl. Datema states he wants to help people revive the ancient craft of breadmaking in their homes. His set includes a journal, which is largely blank except for a basic bread recipe. The designer encourages people to fill the journal’s pages with their own recipes as they experiment and learn.
Accompanying that idea is Datema’s set of breadspoons, labeled ceramic spoons for water, flour, oil, sugar and yeast. Each spoon is for one ingredient and their volumes are pre-measured, so one has only to mix one level spoonful of each to start a perfect dough mixture.
Datema, 25, is a 2013 graduate of the Design Academy Eindhoven. He founded his own studio in 2012, where he designs tableware, culinary products, lighting and furniture.
